Directions for Use (Potting Mixes)
Do these mixes need to be combined with traditional soil before use?
Nope! These mixes are designed with the help of professional agronomists (soil scientists) to be used as-is to provide the structure, drainage, and aeration plants need.
Should I be fertilizing in Sol Soils potting mixes?
Yes! We designed our potting mixes to have the structure, drainage, oxygen flow, and drought tolerant tendencies to increase the likelihood of your plant thriving. We recommend using the full suite of Sol Biotics products, as they're specifically formulated to add everything you need from a soil health and long-term plant health perspective.
- Repot Recovery – Protein shake after a hard workout but for your plant, and doubles as an anti-anxiety med when used every couple of months.
- Necessary Nutrients – The true food for your plant (NPK, i.e. macro-nutrients).
- Monthly Myco – Beneficial fungi and bacteria that help roots grow larger and better regulate food and water intake.
- Soil Salvation – Uses earthworm castings and biochar to strengthen your soil ecosystem every few months.
What fertilizer is best for a chunky or gritty mix?
We recommend using the full suite of Sol Biotics products, as they're specifically formulated to add everything you need from a soil health (beneficial microbes that make organic material available for plants to actually consume) and long-term plant health perspective (macro- and micro-nutrients). They're all designed to be mistake-proof as well, so no need to stop using in winter, or if you over apply anything, you'll still be just fine!!
- Think of the Sol Biotics line in the following ways if compared to a human diet:Repot Recovery - Protein shake after a hard workout but for your plant, and also doubles as an anti-anxiety med when used every couple of months on your entire plant collection.Necessary Nutrients - The true food for your plant (NPK, i.e. macro-nutrients)Monthly Myco - Beneficial fungi and beneficial bacteria combine to help the roots grow larger and better regulate food and water intake for the plant from the soil around itSoil Salvation - Uses earthworm poop and biochar to help make your soil ecosystem stronger and add a boost of energy every few months, like a double-shot shot of espresso for the soil's microbiome
How should I water a chunky or gritty potting mix?
We recommend top watering deeply and relatively infrequently (no more often than weekly for most established plants). The top of the mix will appear dry well before the moisture is truly gone from the core. Picking up the planter is a good way to gauge if there's still moisture inside.
Bottom watering can be useful for peat-based soils, but note that watering in the same basin as other plants can increase the risk of spreading pests or pathogens. Also, keeping plants in high humidity enclosures without good airflow increases the likelihood of pests, disease, algae, and mold.
For our own indoor collection with a few hours of direct sun per day, we rarely water more than once every 2 weeks for leafy houseplants (10–14 days is the general guideline). For succulents and cacti, we increase frequency during warmer growing months and decrease significantly during winter dormancy.
How much mix do I need for repotting?
While every planter and root ball is different, a good rule of thumb is:
- 1 Quart: Fills 1x 5" pot
- 2 Quarts: Fills 2x 5" pots
- 1 Gallon: Fills 3x 6" pots
Recommended conditions
Every person has different conditions in terms of sun exposure, light intensity, air flow, planter situation (please use a drainage hole!, deeper pots take longer to dry through, plastic/sealed ceramic pots hold moisture longer), higher humidity decreases evaporation from the soil, indoors vs. patio, how thirsty or vigorously growing that specific plant is, etc. For our own collection in a standard indoor setting with a few hours of direct sun exposure per day, we rarely water more than once every 2 weeks for leafy houseplants in our mixes (10-14 days is usually the technical direction). For succulents and cacti we have a system for increasing frequency during the warmer growing months and decreasing significantly when they're dormant in the winter.
Root Rot
What is root rot?
Root rot is a pathogen most commonly caused by a fungal disease, dense poor-draining soils, or simply watering too frequently over time, which prevents roots from taking in the oxygen they need. The roots then start to turn dark and die off, which can eventually kill the plant. Allowing the soil to dry between watering sessions is necessary for many traditional houseplants, not just cacti and succulents.
Can I get root rot using Sol Soils?
Absolutely. Overwatering will put plants in any brand or style of potting mix at risk of rot. "Deep and infrequent" is a good mantra to keep your plants free of rot. A few things to keep in mind:
- Overfertilizing can burn roots and cause rot.
- Over-sizing the pot can lead to too much moisture sitting for too long.
- In the couple of weeks after repotting, your plant is likely in shock and more vulnerable to disease.
That said, plants are generally resilient! Don't lose hope if you run into an issue — feel free to reach out to us anytime.
